OpenReception v1 Release

2026-05-04

After a good 10 months of development, the appointment management system OpenReception is now available in a stable Version 1.

OpenReception is free OpenSource software under an AGPL v3 license. This means anyone can run OpenReception for themselves and others. Everyone can contribute.

The development of the OpenReception prototype was funded until 31.03.2026 by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space. With this, the BMFTR underscores the necessity of an open, free, and secure appointment solution for medical practices.

Individuals with technical expertise can use our technical documentation including configuration files to deploy OpenReception free of charge in their organization.

For those who cannot or do not want to self-host, a managed hosting option is available. More information at open-reception.com.

In the future, some features will only be available in a premium tier through managed hosting.

Practices using the Managed Hosting service are also funding the ongoing development of OpenReception.

In our comprehensive documentation, we show what OpenReception can already do today and how practices/organizations can use it.

However, OpenReception is far from finished. In the coming months, we want to bring additional features to both the community and premium versions. Our goal is to make OpenReception a real alternative to data-driven business models in medical appointment scheduling.

Because the sovereignty over personal data belongs to the patients, who entrust it to practices in good faith.

We already accompanied the development of our v1 with two rounds of interviews and usability tests. We have also written reports about them.

We want to continue this, because we are convinced that we need to involve practices and patients in the development process so that OpenReception is guided by their needs.

We invite all interested individuals to participate in the development. This does not necessarily mean writing code. User testing, reporting issues, or writing/correcting translations are all valuable contributions!
